The Hole Truth

A drill can’t drill, when the drill has no juice.
That was my lesson of the morning.

After charging my drill, I started by making two test holes (2” and 2 1/8”) in a couple of plastic lids, so I would have something to use as a template to test the size of potential growing cups, before drilling any holes in the garden itself.

The plastic drinking cups I picked up were too wide, and would not sit anywhere near deep enough, if I tried using them in the bed.

One thing I did find though was that the small dip cups I picked up are a good fit for the 2 1/8” hole. If I had been using a shallower bed, these would have been perfect! I’m going to have to remember I have them tucked away if I find a shallower bed to experiment with.

In the meanwhile, I still have nothing to use in the here and now, and need to come up with an alternative for this build.

[edit]

OK, its been 20 minutes, and I went for the easiest answer.
Amazon is going to deliver a pack of 50 x 2”reusable hydroponic cups tomorrow.
Once those have arrived I’ll see how they fare with my test holes, and confirm if I can get away with using 2” hole saw for the garden.

As an aside, I’ve also been thinking more and more about my spin-plate based pump concept.
I’m pretty sure I can make a housing for my silicone coated nail to spin in, using both sizes of plastic cup, a piece of irrigation line, and a dribble of silicone to hold it all together.
