Over 5L of cider

I suppose I could have said “almost 6L”, but that seems fake and click-baity.

Greetings Cannabals, What’s the good word?

Today I’m going to be talking about the homemade apple cider that is sitting in the fridge, mellowing. Having made, and enjoyed, kvass a vew times now (both the bread and beet based varieties) I thought I would try my hand at making apple cider.

When I saw that the apple cider was easier than both varieties of kvass (its just applejuice and yeast) I knew that I didn’t have any excuses not to try brewing a batch… so I made 3.

The first batch I made with way too much yeast. For some sill reason I thought I needed a tablespoon, so when I saw that there was about 2 tsp left in the jar I thought I’d “make do” and just dumped it all in the first jar.

After doing a bit of quick reading to confirm that I was supposed to be using 1tsp instead of 1Tbsp of yeast for the cider, the next jar was made with only 1 tsp of yeast. Will be interesting to see what difference, if any, I notice between the 2 jars when drinking.

The 3rd jar was put together 4 days later and 1 used 1/2tsp of yeast in it after reading that the 1tbsp was for a gallon of juice, and not 1.75L.
They all sat in an out of the way place in my kitchen for about 2 weeks to ferment before transferring jars and moving to the fridge. Even though they were started at different times I decided to make my life easy and do them all at once.

Now I just need to play the waiting game… apparently these need to sit an mellow for a bit. I can’t wait until they are done! The wee taster I had when transferring (I couldn’t not taste some) had me thinking of a dry crisp wine. When I prep up my next batch I’ll be sure to properly document the process.
