Crop Update: Week 3

Before I start talking about my crops, I would like to preface my update by saying that I faced a lighting challenge this week.
The short version is what was supposed to be a 20 minute upgrade / socket swap on Monday night has turned into a 4 evening thing, with light finally being restored around 9PM Thursday. While I was been able to run an extension cord to feed the pump and keep fluid circulating, I was not able to run the light rack, and needed to rely on ambient daylight from my south-west facing window for those 4 days. (Sometimes you don’t know the extent of a situation until you open things up and try to fix ‘em… and the more you fix, the more you find.)

On the topic of lighting, after power was restored, another change I made to the setup was to connect a grow light to the base of a CD tower (remember those?) and place it on the window sill over the kratky cooler, and leaned a piece of while project-board against it (lean-to style) as an impromptu reflector.

pH seems to be floating between 8.5 and 8.6 for the mustard growing in the Colonel.
( I was going to say that pH seems to be stable, however I realized I don’t know that for sure, as I’ve only been checking in the mornings and I don’t know if the values change through the day (and if they do by how much). Today I am going to check the solution every 2 hours to see how stable my readings for pH and EC/ppm are throughout the day. )
Not a lot of root exposure from the grow cups, the mycorrhizae on the other hand seem to be doing quite well.
All samples have 2 well defined true leaves. White spotting of leaves seems to have stopped, it was quite extensive on one of the leaves of sample 4, leaving it runty and when compared to the other plants. Sample 6 (at the end of the row) has developed a bit of a lean, trying to better position itself under the grow light.

The 5 mustard plants in the kratky cooler are looking leggy. One of the plants may succumb to the white spotting, as unlike the plants in the Colonel, these have not developed any true leaves yet, so this cotyledon damage is severely slowing its development in the less than ideal lighting conditions they were growing in.
Hopefully adding their own grow light to the equation solves the problem.

The kratky jars have all sprouted (3x arugula, 3x kohlrabi) and have been wrapped in foil to keep the light away from the nutrient solution.
